Last weekend, Mediaocean employees in the New York area volunteered at the ‘Wheels2Water’ event in Lido Beach.
The event, held annually by the non-for-profit Testaverde Fund for Spinal Cord Injury, helps paralyzed men and women out of their wheelchairs and onto specially designed surfboards for exhilarating water fun!
The goal of Wheels2Water is to help provide physically disabled individuals with the opportunity to enjoy the recreational and therapeutic benefits of surfing and water sports, in order to improve their overall quality of life and health.
As one participant said, “It’s about enjoying life and not letting a disability cripple you.” For many of the wheelchair-bound participants, the experience of surfing can provide a unique sense of freedom and movement which they aren’t always able to enjoy in day-to-day life.
The event got a lot of really great press, too. Check out these stories from Pix11, Fox News, and CBS.
As you can see, it was a truly great day for everyone involved – volunteers and participants, alike — and we’re all looking forward to doing it again next year!
